The Thomas B. Foster Award for Excellence honors an outstanding Seattle Public Schools K-8, middle, or high school principal exemplifying excellence. The award was established in honor of Tom Foster, a Seattle civic leader committed to education issues. A devoted father and a founder of the Seattle law firm Foster Pepper, his legacy continues through the award and through the lives of those he touched; the Foster family and Foster Pepper employees continue to support a variety of civic causes in Seattle.
Representatives of the Alliance for Education, Seattle Public Schools, and the Foster family select the winner of the Foster Award yearly. The award is accompanied by a cash payment to the principal’s school, which the principal uses to advance academic excellence within the school building.
Candidates must have served a minimum of one entire school year in their buildings and be under contract for the subsequent year. Selection criteria include:
- Principal’s commitment and effectiveness in improving student achievement, as measured by the WASL and other Seattle Public Schools performance measures
- Leadership and team building, as reflected in staff and student climate surveys
- Innovation in educational and administrative techniques
- Leadership participation in school-wide and district-wide initiatives
- Prudent and creative use of resources.
